Why dextromethorphan often misused?

There is one question that helps to answer about the misuse of dextromethorphan (DMP) recently increased. The question is, why it is often misused?

Dextromethorphan (DMP) is a cough suppressant drug "antitusif" which can be obtained freely, and are commonly found in cough and cold medicine dosage. Adult dose is 15-30 mg, taken 3-4 times daily. Effect of anti cough can last 5-6 hours after the use of per-oral route. If used by the rules, rarely cause significant side effects.

Desktrometorfan is a kind of opiate compounds, but weak. Most of the literature indeed call it that. Chemically, DMP (D-3-methoxy-N-methyl-morphinan) is an isomer of levomethorphan dekstro, a semisynthetic derivative of morphine. Although similar structure narcotics, DMP does not act on opiate receptor sub-type of MU, like morphine or heroin, but he was acting on opiate receptor subtypes sigma, so the effect is relatively small dependence.

In large doses, the pharmacological effects of PCP or ketamine DMP which resembles an NMDA receptor antagonist. DMP is often misused because in large doses it causes euphoria and hallucinations effects of vision or hearing. Intoxication or overdose can cause hyper eksitabilitas DMP, fatigue, sweating, talking mess, hypertension, and bulging eyes (nystagmus). Especially when used in conjunction with alcohol, its effects can be very dangerous and can cause death.

DMP trespasser describes the fourth plateau dose-dependent, as follows:

PlateauDose (mg)Behavioral Effects
1st100–200Mild stimulation
2st200–400Euphoria and hallucinations
3st300–600Disorders of visual perception and loss of motor coordination
4th500–1500Dissociative sedation

Role of pharmacist
For it was cautious start and pharmacists need to control strictly the use of these drugs. In many countries, many reported abuses DMP and DMP many combined with other addictive drugs. Until now it has not been there regulations governing the use of the DMP, including in America. But with the increasing abuse of DMP, the agency is authorized in the U.S. DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) is currently reviewing the possibility to control the use of DMP. INFO could be seen on http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugs_concern/dextro_m/dextro_m.htm. I think we should start, hopefully this info is useful.
